Circuit Bending

Circuit Bending is the process of deliberately short-circuiting low voltage electronics for creative purposes. A device which has been purposefully shorted is said to be "bent".

A common method would be to connect an electrical wire between the sound chip in a low voltage toy to a surrounding transistor on the circuit board, separated by a potentiometer. The sound-producing circuit would be shorted out by the current from the transistor, and the voltage would be modulated by the resistance in the potentiometer.

Although potentiometers are the most common device used in bending, switches, photo-resistors, led's, capacitors, and other electronic components are widely used.
